FrSky X14S - a sport/competition radio with TW/Twin support

How times change! FrSky, once champions of open source, now have their own proprietary operating system called Ethos. Their range of transmitters has grown, too, split between the Tandem (2.4GHz/900MHz) and Twin (2x2.4GHz) families. 

The TX14S is one of their more recent radios. With compact dimensions and Twin support, the TX14S appears to be a good choice for soaring and electric flight. So, when FrSky offered me a unit to review I needed no persuading.

Sailplane setups now available for Horus

After a number of RF firmware updates, FrSky's flagship transmitter is finally starting to fulfill the high expectations of FrSky fans. I think we can expect to see many more Horus's appearing on the field/slope shortly, and it'll get a further boost when OpenTx 2.2 is officially released. In anticipation of this I've ported over my F3F, F3J, E-Soar and E-Soar Plus templates to the new transmitter.

Migrating setups from Taranis X9D to X9E

The Taranis X9E contains a superset of the X9D's controls, and in theory any setup designed for the X9D will also run on the X9E. In practice, setups which use LS or RS will need modification.

F3F Setup for Taranis version 3.1

Ask ten different F3F pilots for their ideal transmitter configuration, and you can be sure you'll receive ten different answers. Some like US style hand held trannies, others like tray types. I prefer to fly with my thumbs, you might prefer to 'pinch'. And so it goes on, right down to the location and order of the switches.

It's been a while in the making, but my setup for F3J / Thermal Duration is finally ready. The delay was to add adjustable deadband on the spoiler stick, and also improve the documentation.

A plane in Spain

Just returned from our annual fortnight in Spain with Vic, Sylvia, Kevin, Andrzej. As usual we flew at the wonderful La Muela, the perfect setting for both slope and thermal flying. This year, though, we went in late summer. A good decision, as the slope conditions were fantastic, a steady breeze on the SW face virtually every day.

FrSky Taranis - review and photo gallery

FrSky's new transmitter, the Taranis, continues to generate great interest. It has many advanced features, yet it's very aggressively priced at a shade under £160 / $210 - and that includes an 8-channel receiver with built-in telemetry.

Porting an F3F setup from the Multiplex 4000 to OpenTx

Most of us are familiar with open-source software, whether it's operating systems, office suites or any of the thousands of other programs. But open-source firmware for R/C transmitters? It may sound a little strange in a world of commercial R/C systems. Well it exists... and it's called 'OpenTx'.

And very soon you're going to hear a lot more about it, as FrSky have adopted OpenTx as the operating system for their forthcoming Taranis.

FrSky Taranis - spiritual successor to the Multiplex 4000?

There's been a lot of interest in the FrSky Taranis recently. In fact it must be one of the most eagerly anticipated R/C system in recent years.

The reasons are not hard to find. First there’s the price - just $175 / £139.99 (Tx only). Second, it offers the kind of capabilities you'd expect to see in a high end set. 

It's sure going to ruffle a few feathers over at Futaba and JR, not to mention the boys at Bretten-Gölshausen.
