Crow-aware adaptive elevator trim

Crow brakes are essential for precise landings, however they have a varying impact on pitch trim. In order to use them effectively, the pilot must neutralise these pitch changes, and this has traditionally been a tiresome process involving multiple landings and curve adjustments.

In this post I describe a simple way for the pilot to achieve perfect trim throughout crow range - even before the landing of a new model!

Adaptable ballast spreadsheets, using array formulae

As airframes get stronger and skinnier, the ballast arrangements get ever more complex. Many F3F models carry wing ballast, joiner ballast, and optional steel joiners. Generating a ballast chart to stick on your trannie box can be a bit of a challenge!

This post describes how to construct a ballast spreadsheet using a generic structure which is easy to adapt for specific models.

RTGmodel Stribog review

At the end of 2017 I decided to look around for a new F3F machine for the 2018 competition season. After hearing good things about the Stribog I placed an order, and nine weeks later a box arrived at the door - a very large one containing some rather lovely plastic...

Fast forward... the Stribog has been assembled, tested, and flown [and won] in competition. Has it replaced the Needle 115 as my number one model? Read on!

Version 4.0 of F3F setup for Taranis is now available. Enhancements are aimed at getting your 6-servo F3F ship into the air as quickly as possible. So if you want the mixing without the fiddling, this is the version for you!

Flight mode selection issue and fix

There's a bug in Companion 2.1.2, 2.1.3 and 2.1.4 which impacts my current F3F, F3J and E-Soar setups. If you open the EEPE file in one of these versions you may find that one or more flight modes cannot be activated in the simulator. The error will also be present after uploading to your transmitter.

The problem has been fixed in Companion 2.1.5 so if you have this version or later, you need not read further.

Ask ten different F3F pilots for their ideal transmitter configuration, and you can be sure you'll receive ten different answers. Some like US style hand held trannies, others like tray types. I prefer to fly with my thumbs, you might prefer to 'pinch'. And so it goes on, right down to the location and order of the switches.

Reverse Diff - or how to improve your landings

Crow brakes are virtually essential for F3X models. They allow you to bring your model down quickly, without building excessive speed. However, deploying crow brakes can adversely affect roll response. In this post I'll examine the reasons behind it and describe a couple of techniques for improving roll control.

The techniques are particularly relevant for OpenTx which does not provide these features built in - you have to cook them yourself! (A few of us do enjoy cooking...)

The Jeti DC-16 is rather interesting. It's the first transmitter to be manufactured by Jeti, the styling is different, and it has some novel features. It certainly generated a lot of interest in the hands of my clubmate Dave Woods, at Ivinghoe Beacon.

Cockpit SX M-LINK goes F3F

As we roll into 2012, I'm at last migrating my F3F models from 35 MHz to 2.4 GHz. Yep, it's time to recognise that the world is changing, most competition pilots already having made the switch. And it may seem a little thing, but having a tiny little aerial in place of the enormous 35 MHz fishing rods will make it easier to negotiate the rocks and rabbit holes which inhabit our slopes.

Programming your transmitter for F3F

F3F models are fairly demanding in terms of programming (if not quite as complex as F5J or DLG!). Aside from having four-servo wings there are ergonomic and trimming considerations which need to be taken into account, especially for competition work.

Over the years, I've competed in over 140 F3F competitions [as of Feb 2025] and programmed a variety of radios for this task. These include the Futaba FF7 Super, MPX 3030, MPX 4000, MPX Royal Evo, MPX Cockpit SX, Futaba 12FG and FrSky X9D+ running OpenTx. More recently, a FrSky X20 running Ethos.

Pete Bailey (1947 - 2010)


F3F pilots are a close knit bunch, thanks to the wonderful sites we are privileged to fly from, and the shared experience of competition. So it's always a keenly felt loss when we lose a pilot.

Pete Bailey is the latest to leave us, after succumbing to illness all too soon after his retirement. Pete was an interesting and compassionate man with firmly held views. He was also a determined competitor, and I always enjoyed his company at the many events we attended.

Jon Edison has prepared a simple but fitting tribute which you can read here
