RadioMaster GX15 review

Back in January I reviewed RadioMaster's new flagship radio, the TX16S Mk3. I found it to be a fine general-purpose radio, for both FPV and LoS (line of sight) applications. However, for LoS flying alone I felt it was a little over-specified, plus there were a few usability compromises.

Enter the new GX15, another high end radio from RadioMaster... but lighter, and specifically targeting LoS users.

So, is the GX15 the answer to glider flyers' prayers? I've had several weeks with a review unit, during which I’ve done extensive flight testing... so read on to see how it performs!

Over the years, literally dozens of radios have passed through my hands. There have been very few bad ones,  but only a select few have become my daily drivers. 

One of them is the original RadioMaster TX16S Mk1, upgraded with AG01 gimbals. It's served me faithfully for almost five years and dozens of F3F competitions. 

Times change, though, and the design is starting to show its age. Both the Mk1 and Mk2 struggle with recent versions of EdgeTX. (This, by the way, is why I'm still running OpenTX on my Mk1).

Enter the TX16S Mk3, RadioMaster's new flagship radio. Its H7 processor promise a more agile EdgeTX experience, and its advanced RF module supports ELRS Gemini and Xrossband modes.

Since their beginnings just five years ago, RadioMaster have built an enviable reputation for their well designed and reasonably priced transmitters.

The TX15 is their latest unit - and rather interesting it is, too. Marrying a fast STM32 H7 processor with the latest EdgeTX 3.0, the TX15 provides a glimpse into the future of open source RC.

In this review, I'll explore the TX15’s features and take it for a test flight with an F3F sailplane. So read on!

Radiomaster AG01 Nano gimbals review

The Radiomaster Pocket is a wonderfully versatile little transmitter - it can be used for anything from cheap foamies to high-value moulded models.

If it has a weakness, it's the rather ordinary gimbals - with their all plastic construction, they lack the precision feel of the AG01 CNC gimbals which I have come to love on the TX16S.

Well, it seems that Radiomaster have an answer to this: a CNC gimbal specifically designed for the Pocket. They've called it the AG01 Nano. (Not to be confused with the AG01 Mini, which targets the Zorro and TX12.)

FrSky X14S - a sport/competition radio with TW/Twin support

How times change! FrSky, once champions of open source, now have their own proprietary operating system called Ethos. Their range of transmitters has grown, too, split between the Tandem (2.4GHz/900MHz) and Twin (2x2.4GHz) families. 

The TX14S is one of their more recent radios. With compact dimensions and Twin support, the TX14S appears to be a good choice for soaring and electric flight. So, when FrSky offered me a unit to review I needed no persuading.

Once in a while a transmitter comes along which is different and interesting, and it’s this kind of radio that I love to review.

Enter the Radiomaster GX12 - small in size yet with several novel features, including gimbals with 3D Hall sensors, and support for Gemini transmission modes.

But  just how good is the GX12 for sailplane and electric applications? And what are the benefits, if any, of Gemini? Read on and find out!

It's hard to believe that ten years have passed since I created OpenTX Clinic! 

At the time, FrSky had just launched the Taranis X9D with a novel operating system called Open9X soon to be renamed OpenTX. Since then both OpenTX and its offspring EdgeTX have exploded in popularity, and the website has expanded with tutorials, templates and Lua scripts.

ELRS is a bit of a sleeper - it's been around for a while, but if you're  a fixed wing/LOS (line of site) flyer, then you may not have heard of it. You soon will though, especially if you use EdgeTX or OpenTX. 

So what exactly is ELRS, and what do you need to get started?  Read on, while I take you on a tour. Since ELRS is still evolving I won't cover everything in detail. Instead, I'll provide a overview of the important bits with links to the official documention.

RadioMaster Pocket: a fine little EdgeTX / ELRS / MPM transmitter!

What's this dinky transmitter on my desk? It's the Pocket - the smallest in a series of compact transmitters from RadioMaster. It comes with a choice of modules (ELRS or CC2500 MPM) and is very keenly priced. Oh, and it's stored in a little pouch!

Spoiler alert: the Pocket may only cost £65 yet, in terms of programming, it’s more than a match for £1000+ radios. I know because I've flown an F3F model with it, with all the mixer bells and whistles. Crazy times!

Review of RadioMaster ER6G, ER6GV, ER8G and ER8GV receivers for ELRS

RadioMaster have just released a bunch of ELRS receivers specially for gliders and electric models.  These are notable for being some of the first ELRS receivers to incorporate servo connectors - no need for a separate PWM converter board. 

I've been evaluating these receivers including flight testing them in DLG and F3F models. Let's take a closer look...

Lockdown! Here in the UK it's been three weeks of relative quiet. On the bright side, I've been keeping busy with a couple of projects - a new template, and a testing tool for OpenTX setups...
